Congress Stepping Up To Regulate Ticketmaster

Fans attend a concert in an arena, there are bright lights and one fan is on another's shoulders

U.S. Congressmen Bill Pascrell Jr. and Frank Pallone Jr. have introduced some exciting new legislation dubbed "The BOSS and SWIFT Act" (awesome name, right?), aimed at finally regulating ticket sales for concerts. This bill aims to clean up the badly corrupted live events ticket market, bringing transparency to hidden fees and putting some buyer protection in place for folks looking to buy tickets.

This legislation comes hot on the heels of the introduction of the ‘Taylor Swift bill’ in Massachusetts, a revolutionary move that requires ticket-selling companies to disclose the complete cost of tickets, including all fees, before customers make a purchase (we've all been stung by extra fees, haven't we?)

But it's not just about hidden fees. The BOSS and SWIFT Act also looks at on-sale transparency, speculative tickets and fake websites. All important stuff when you're trying to buy that coveted ticket to see your favorite performer without having to sell a kidney or re-mortgage your house.

Pascrell states, “For too long, millions of American fans have been unable to catch a break when it comes to tickets... Taylor Swift's fans weren't the first, and they won't be the last, to be stung by Ticketmaster's policies and a broken market."

Congressman Pallone is also excited about the new legislation, saying, "Consumers deserve to enjoy their favorite artists and live entertainment without breaking the bank. It’s past time to update the ticket marketplace to ensure it’s fair, transparent, and working for ticket buyers – not Ticketmaster or resellers."

This isn't the first time these two have taken on the ticketing giants – they introduced an earlier version of this legislation back in '09, when Congress was flooded with complaints from fans who were directed to secondary sites with inflated prices when trying to buy Springsteen tour tickets.

This time, however, it looks like they might just have the support needed to make some real changes to this damaged market. Get ready to wave goodbye to hidden fees and unpredictable pricing - The BOSS and SWIFT Act is coming to town!
